Search for honours begins, team events commence Santiago schedule

Winners last year at the 2018 Paraguay Junior and Cadet Open, Brazil’s Guillerme Teodoro and the host’s Valentina Rios lead their nations in the search for honours at the 2019 South American Junior and Cadet Championships.

The 28th edition of the tournament, play commences in the Chilean capital city of Santiago on Thursday 14th March, concluding on Monday 18th March.

Guilherme Teodoro lines up alongside Diogo Silva, Rafael Torino and Laura Sebold; the Brazilians being the second seeds in the junior boys’ team event; top spot belongs to Chile, led by Nicolas Burgos. He is supported by Andres Martinez, Jorge Paredes and Sebastian Gonzalez.

Notably, at the Buenos Aires 2018 Youth Olympic Games, both Guilherme Teodoro and Nicolas Burgos progressed safely through the initial group stage of the men’s singles event before experiencing main draw defeats.

Top spot for Chile in the junior boys’ team event with Brazil in second spot, it is the same in the junior girls’ team competition. Valentina Rios heads the order for Chile alongside Jerusalen Flores, Natalie Ramos and Macarena Montecino; for Brazil, the selection reads Tamyres Fukase, Lais Mika Yuta, Livia Lima and Amy Sekimoto.

Meanwhile, in the cadet boys’ team and cadet girls’ team competitions, Brazil and Peru share top spots. In the former led by Carlos Fernandez, presently listed at no.3 on the under 15 boys’ world rankings but having been in top spot in the first two months of the year, Peru occupies first place. In the latter Brazil is at the head of the list, Giulia Takahashi, on duty last year at the 2018 ITTF World Cadet Challenge, leads the team.

Carlos Fernandez is supported by Adrian Rubinos, Renzo Zeballos and Rodrigo Viga; Giulia Takahashi is joined by Laura Watanabe, Fabiana Shintate and Karina Shiray.

In each of the four events, six teams compete. The countries represented are Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Ecuador, Paraguay and Peru.
